Most frequent questions and answers
What is block printing?
madeclothing’s products are made using the art of traditional hand block printing. It starts with an original design sketch on paper. The design is transferred onto the block and artfully hand carved into the surface. This printing block is then covered with ink and carefully hand pressed onto the garment. This authentic method produces a unique hand-crafted image, making each piece of clothing truly one-of-a-kind.
Block printing cont.
Block printing is a ancient technique that originates from China with the earliest surviving examples from over 2,000 years ago. It spread throughout Asia including Japan where it was widely used in the Edo period (1603-1868). In some small workshops and villages in India, there is a commitment to keeping the centuries old tradition of block printing alive to this day. Passed through the generations this craftsmanship has been practiced in India since the 12th century.
How durable are the inks?
The ink I use is permanent and becomes one with the fibres after it has been heat set into the fabric. Therefore it cannot be separated from the material. The garments are machine washable. In fact, they just get softer with each wash so you can cherish them for years to come. The ink is non toxic water based ink to be environmentally friendly!
How do I care for my Prints?
The garments are machine washable. I recommend washing on cold and line drying. Ironing is ok on the backside of the print. Just turn your garment inside out and iron directly. Washing instructions are written on the label of each garment. Please follow them to ensure that your garments last as long as possible. In order to remain environmentally friendly, I recommend you wash your clothes at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees and that you do not use a dryer.
Are the products certified?
From my supplier Stanley/Stella: Most of our products are certified. The GOTS standard applies to all of our 100% organic cotton garments, the OCS Blended standard applies to our products that are made of several materials (Cotton/Polyester, Cotton/Tencel, Cotton/Rayon, Cotton/Wool). OCS 100 (only for our Stanley Acts and Stella Likes garments). Our garments also meet the Oek Tex standard and are Reach Compliant.
We are affiliated to the Fairwear Foundation and so we can guarantee that all of our products are ethically made.
Certification cont.
Why do some products not have a organic certification? A message from my supplier: Stanley/Stella ;Some of our products are made from pulpwood fibres, such as rayon and Tencel. For some of our garments, we also use recycled polyester. These products comply with the OCS Blended standard as they are blended with organic cotton. However, when a garment is 100% made with one single material then there is no certification as there is no certifying body for these materials. Nevertheless, these materials are environmentally friendly.
